Dhanush thaandavam!

With Kolaveri still doing the rounds, there is one thing about Dhanush that caught my attention last year. He has mastered a unique style of dance for himself and does that in every single hit song. Samples below.

See his performance at 0:59 seconds. This is Mayakkam Enna.

Watch this one from 0:29 seconds. He does that practically throughout the song after that! And this is the second song from the same film.

The award winning Aadukalam. This is one of the most popular ones. From 0:33 he is all Dhanush-thaandavam

Of all the contemporary song-and-dance-heroes in Tamil cinema, Dhanush is perhaps the only one I could attribute a definitive style of dance to. Something that seems to be working for him and something he seems to take pride in. What do you think?

  1. Of course yes! Also, I think Dhanush is one actor who takes acting seriously. I mean, while my friends describe Mayakkam Enna, 3 (or generally any Dhanush film other than those by Mithran R Jawahar) as psycho films, I see that those films are the ones that offer scope for acting. They show how well this kolaveri-english-speaking thin boy (or man) can get into the skins of a character so well. And he doesn’t stop with that, making it difficult to lable him in a particular genre. From Thulluvadho… to Mayakkam enna, his fils range from commercial to slapstick to pure cinema. 🙂

That so true. Dhanush is an extremely gifted dancer, though not in the conventional way. Even his dance sequence in ‘Kadhal Konden’ (below) was quite a brilliant piece.

Unlike Vijay or Simbhu who forcibly showcase their dancing talents, which is completely disconnected from the movie or the character, Dhanush uses dance to tell us more about his character. In Kadhal konden he effectively uses it to illustrate the character’s pent up violence, the mad intense love he has been harboring and also to let the audience know that the character is in control of the plot (at that point atleast).

Even the Lungi dance in Aadhukalam does the same. It so effectively portrays the joy of a man who thinks his love has been reciprocated. ‘Flying in the air’ kind. Plus using the lungi as the prop highlights the societal background the character comes from.
